Edit to add: just so I don’t come across as “all gas no brakes” I have close relationships with two Trump voters. I understand nuance, and I work on them as I can, and I’m making real progress. We DO need to bring MAGAs back to reality if we can, and probably don’t have a hope without it.

There’s no such thing as simple psychology. You’re talking about the fucking human mind here mate. We don’t even understand a fraction of a fraction of a percent of how it really works.
People are so nuanced and complex with so many variables at play, it’s never about one thing or two things, or a hundred things. It’s about the condition of being human. You can’t just boil things down to “simple psychology” and then walk away like you proved something or said something insightful.
Humans are complex, yes even MAGAts. You are not at a protest because you are expecting to convince people your ideology is better than theirs with clever signs. You’re there to show support for an event or action item that has no other way to show support. You’re there to meet other protestors and create a community of like minded individuals who can help and support each other.
Protests are a sign that the system is failing/has failed.
All the things you think should happen should have happened further up the pipeline before the protest. But it didn’t fucking work did it? They’re still fucking dipshits gargling trump’s balls no matter what he does to them.
So people are out in the streets and pissed off. They’ve got nowhere else to vent or voice their frustrations of what they see as a failed system/society. They are not there to convert, they’re there to announce loudly that they disagree with what’s being done right now. That’s it.

More complex psychology suggests that certain ways of thinking can’t easily be changed particularly the type of person that backs Trump.
Anyone whose mind hasn’t already been changed isn’t going to listen to reason. Being more aggressive will inspire some people to be more active than they already are. I don’t see the downside here.

I agree completely. The MAGA fascists should be ashamed and we should normalize shaming bigotry, hate and fascism. So much right wing rhetoric has misused the concept of free speech. What asshole fascists really mean by free speech is the ability to present hate speech without any of the social consequences. I feel like signs like this are the least we could do to stamp out bigotry and hate speech overall.

By adopting this growing strategy of using gay coded innuendo as a weapon - we are telling the maga crowd that we respect it as a weapon, we are validating that we think it has power.
What you mistake for “oh the soft weak left has a no-no list that holds us back” was us not reacting and thus not giving power to using gay innuendo as a weapon, so that lgbt peoples existence isn’t thought of as a weapon.
We were quite close too - I Haven’t heard much anti gay rhetoric used as insults by the right, no where neat as much as 10 20 30 years ago. The right had realized that that stuff had lost effectiveness and thus switched to different insults.
But here with these stupid memes and signs that I see more and more often are re-weaponizing anti-gay discourse and I hate it and it definitely will lead to a lower quality of life for lgbt people, it will definitely keep more lgbt people in the closet, and all the knock on effects of that including suicide.
Words have power, and we give them power by using them. Think about what you are giving power to.

It’s completely loaded with misogyny, and attempting to “reclaim” the language doesn’t work here. Fuck is a completely different scenario. The gay/ball gurgle problem has already been excellently pointed out above. It also applies to women.
