Why have a specific day? Why not have a two week period, this would have almost everyone not having to choose between work and voting.

We know something is out there; galaxies are rotating far too quickly for our understanding of gravity to be correct. This is based on the observable matter.
For the galaxies to be rotating at the speeds we observe, we need approx 5 times the matter we see. So it is not like we have missed 10 - 20% of the matter that interacts with electromagnetic radiation, we would have had to have missed an extra 500%
As someone else pointed out, MOND is the next most promising candidate, but it has major issues even explaining what we see. Which is why it hasn’t received widespread acceptance.
I don’t have an answer; I have a few ideas. It maybe that something MOND adjacent is the answer; i.e. on the largest scales spacetime “relaxes” more when there is nothing pulling on it. So near galaxies and clusters spacetime is under more stress, this stress could equate to spacetime curving more on galaxy sized scales. But on the small scales we work on the extra stress will be almost invisible.
But as for us figuring out what “dark” matter is in your lifetime, unless you are already in your 80’s; I think there is a very good chance. The only thing we know for sure about dark matter, is that it interacts with gravity (spacetime). We are building some pretty epic gravitational wave detectors, bringing the detection threshold lower.
Is it lead?
Long ago when I worked in supermarkets, our 12 item line was a hard limit; the scanner stopped working at 12. If you had more than that, it was your hard luck item 13 simply wouldn’t scan.
Many times this caused problems, mainly for the customer.
Customer: Hey it is only 2 more items.
Operator: But I can’t scan it, the scanner stops at 12.
Customer: But it is only two more items!!
Operator: I understand that, but the scanner won’t take them.
Customer: FINE, just start a new transaction!
Operator: If you will please go to the back of the line then.
Customer: WHAT, but I’m here now!!!
Supervisor: What seems to be the problem here?
Operator: More than 12 items.
Customer: I ONLY HAVE 2 EXTRA ITEMS!!!
Supervisor: I understand, if you could please go to the back of the line to get the extra two items, we will be happy to help you.
Customer: WHAT THE FUCK, IT IS JUST TWO EXTRA ITEMS!!!
Supervisor: If you want, them in one transaction we can cancel this one and move you to a full sized checkout.
Customer: …ENRAGED RANTING…
Supervisor: If you are going to be abusive to me or my staff, I’ll have to ask you to leave.
Word of that type of thing gets around, for the number of people through the supermarket, the total number of incidents was very low. But they happened at least once a week.
Long past, but for old files especially, old .doc files it is great as a backup.
It lives in a VM that never has access to the internet, it almost never gets started up.
I have office 2007 on a winxp VM, I haven’t had to use it in a few years, but it is there as a back up
This but realistic.
Swap the order of the cutlery draw, put the spoons where the knives are supposed to be. Be the chaos in the world that you want to see.
Hell my home server, running on low end Xeon hardware had uptime numbers around 3 years…then there was a power cut. Next down day was another power cut a year or so later. Total around 8 years running with 5 outages, all but one due to power loss (other was Ubuntu 16.04 - 18.04 upgrade).
Just updated to Ubuntu server 20.04 so uptime is only 7 days at this point.
Well there is that protective layer in the atmosphere that we fucked up.
The ozone layer is slowly healing itself, but we still have a long way to go before it is stable again.
Also as others pointed out, we don’t work the fields and spend most of our time outside any more…so the natural protection isn’t building up like it did in the past.
