  • I agree.

Lemmy is still finding its feet and I think things like this will improve as it continues to grow and mature.

While Lemmy has been around since before the reddit drama, many of the large surges in users have been reddit refugees. As a result a lot of the apps we have are ports of reddit apps that the devs slapped together in a hurry to let users pivot to Lemmy. As time passes we’re seeing a number of new apps pop up with Lemmy specific features, and some of the older apps are still/finally being updated to be more feature rich.

The software Lemmy runs is also changing fairly rapidly so there’s some feature disparity between the webui and the various apps. Part of the normal growth process for a younger social media imo, but frustrating at times.

  • Went from Google to Proton and have since moved on from Proton. If there’s one thing I wish I would’ve thought of before switching it would’ve been not using a single provider for everything.

At the end of the day it got me off Google, but with more or less the same situation I started with. Everything I was using was housed by one company. If they go under or turn evil you’re scrambling to replace all your online services at once all over again. That isn’t something I’m comfortable with so I split my service selection up and moved to multiple companies for the services I actually use.

Having everything in one place is super convenient until something happens that makes you want or need to move again. I’m happier now and ended up paying a bit less overall which is cool.

  • Lots of new people have been popping up lately. Very cool.

Hopefully existing users don’t run them off with their smear campaigns of instances they don’t like. I can’t imagine it’s very welcoming to join a new type of social media only to get told you joined a “bad” instance or that the communities you found are “tankies” and whatnot. Give people a chance to bed in and make their mind up for themselves instead of shoving negativity and personal bias in their face on day one IMO.

Lemmy is already a big shift from what people are used to. Don’t discourage them by being part of the problem they’re trying to escape.
